Charlie Benante Relaunches Benante’s Blend Coffee Line

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, June 7, 2017 at 2:28 PM (PST)

A bunch of cool bands from Life Of Agony to Tombs have branched out into the interesting realm of coffee sales on the side. This is not a joke. Whatever pays the bills or is a passion, right? I mean Purple Pam, Bad Brains and a bunch of other bands made hot sauce as well! And we know a lot of groups have made beer, from Daylight Dies to Sepultura Weizen to Kid Rock’s shitty “Badass American Lager”!

Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante loves coffee. This might explain how at his age he is still able to fucking out slay pretty much every other drummer in thrash with the debatable exception of Lombardo and Hoglan. Is caffeine the secret to the power of Suzerain’s intro? Who knows.

Anyway, having teamed up to collaborate with Chicago’s Dark Matter Coffee Co., his brand “Benante’s Blend” has undergone enhancements that include higher quality choice of coffee beans, a change in the way the beans are roasted that give the coffee a larger and more flavorful taste, and other tweaks, Benante and Dark Matter are proud to announce the relaunch of “Benante’s Blend.”

The coffee will still be available in two varieties, the “Be All End All” blend which is a dark roast with a real kick, and the “Forever Metal” blend, a milder coffee.  And, despite the upgrades, Benante is keeping the price the same.
“I’d been hearing about Dark Matter for awhile,” said Benante.  “They’re based in Chicago where I live, so I tried some of their coffee and thought it was great.  We hooked up, I went down to their headquarters and spent a day there just talking coffee, doing some tasting and I have to say, I felt like I was part of this coffee family.  Everyone there really enjoys the art of coffee, as do I, so this was something I was really interested in being a part of.  We worked together to come up with what I feel is a perfect cup of coffee, and I’m happy to say that my Benante’s Blend is under the umbrella of the Dark Matter coffee family.”

The Anthrax listening party for 11th album For All Kings at the excellent Butler, NJ based media and educational facility Architekt Music (Sevendust, Thank You, Scientist) was a real treat. A limited group of lucky fans were treated to lengthy and quite hysterical Q+A, delicious catering (I’d been wondering what the food would consist of due to the interesting varied backgrounds of the band members) and the first real taste of the triumphant latest album from the thrash greats. Truly one of the strongest entries in Anthrax history, For All Kings deserves a place in the collection of every metal fan.

Scott Ian came out and introduced the record joking that we had all gathered to hear the new Megadeth album before seriously thanking everyone and letting the room hear the epic and energized tunes. Huge choruses that showcase Belladonna’s considerable ear for hooks that could stand up with the Black Album but nonetheless still elsewhere pack an earlier thrash glory days reminiscent metal punch, massive riffs from the band ranging from almost Ministry-esque tight syncopation to classic metal leads and Priest influenced barn burners plus some of the craziest Charlie Benante drumming on wax to date add up to one serious contender.

How great is the above photo?! Classic.

These knuckleheads have given the world so much and the world owes them true metal thanks for all time \m/.

The Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of American History has just posted a video profile of Anthrax, “How New York of the ’80s Helped Influence Anthrax to Create East Coast Thrash,” as part of its Places of Invention exhibit’s interactive online map.

The Top 6 Albums of 2015 (longhairedpoet)

With news late this year that Eddie Hermida is getting back together with All Shall Perish, with an Ozzy solo album expected in 2016, with talk of another Black Sabbath album and with another Meat Loaf album in the works, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming years.

2015 was a bad year for me personally, but I wanted to make sure that unlike in 2014, I came and did a ‘best of’ list.

Looking back at the year that was, I tried to be as thorough as I could be. In the end I came up with six brutal fucking albums.

So, without any further ado, here it is – my top 6 albums of 2015.

“Benante’s Blend” new coffee line announced

It’s been a long time coming, but unabashed coffee connoisseur, Anthrax’s Charlie Benante, has entered the world of entrepreneurship, announcing “Benante’s Blend.” The coffee will come in two different varieties: the ‘Be All End All’ blend which is a dark roast with a real kick, and the ‘Forever Metal’ blend, a milder coffee. “Benante’s Blend” will be available beginning today through Benante’s website HERE.

“I grew up in a large Italian family and coffee was a daily staple in our home,” said Benante. “As a kid, I loved coffee so much, my mother said that at one point, she put some coffee in my bottle. For me, the taste of coffee is one of the greatest tastes that there is on earth, so I decided to create what was for me, the perfect cup of coffee.”

This is actually Benante’s second foray into the world of coffee. Years ago, he joined up with Dave Mustaine for a line of coffee and coffee products. “I’ve learned so much since then,” said Benante, “especially about selecting and blending the right beans, and how important roasting is.”

Benante hooked up with a company that specializes in coffee roasting. “I was pretty specific about the tastes I was looking for,” Benante explained. “I told them the type of coffee I wanted, what some of my favorite coffees were, and we built it from there. We combined beans from different regions, Brazil, Costa Rica, Mexico, Sumatra and Africa, and tweaked the amount of time the beans were roasted to get just the right taste. It was a process, I tested a lot of different blends, but it was a lot of fun.”

“I love coffee so much,” Benante added, “if I could make it a cologne, I would wear it.”

In between coffee tastings, Benate has been recording the next Anthrax album due out later this year. The band kicks off leg one of its 2015-2016 global tour on April 24. Dates are below.

Clockwise from Left/front: Scott Ian, Frank Bello, Charlie Benante, Joey Belladonna, Jon Donias

5 time Grammy nominated metal lifers Anthrax are about done with their follow-up to the widely praised and fan recent favorite Worship Music (the “comeback” album to many followers of the band).

I’m extremely stoked to hear Jon Donias’ contributions, as the band reports he’s played leads on 7 or 8 tunes so far. Jon, of course, was part of the great Shadows Fall and replaced longtime fan fave Rob Caggiano. Fans can catch both on tour when Caggiano’s current band, Danish hellions Volbeat, tour with Anthrax this year (dates below).

Anthrax – Joey Belladonna/vocals, Frank Bello/bass, Charlie Benante/drums, guitarist Jon Donais and Scott Ian/rhythm guitar – started recording the new album in November last year. According to Benante, “‘Worship Music’ started a new chapter in our career, and it has served as an inspiration for this new album. ‘Worship’ was made up of a lot of different types of songs, some thrashy, some very mid-90s Anthrax-sounding, but this new one is really thrashy.”

Said Bello, “The thing about Anthrax…we have this heavy, thrashy music and Joey’s powerful and melodic vocals. I love heavy music, but I also love melody, so the challenge is to blend them together so they sound like Anthrax, and I think we’ve done a really good job of that, especially on this new record.”

“The lyrics I write tend to go along with the way the music sounds, and this new music is very angry,” Ian added. “Lots of people said that ‘Worship Music’ was a return to the roots of the band…well, this record is even more so. Unlike ‘Worship Music,’ we wrote this new album with a line-up, with Joey in the band, and that has made all the difference in the world. Joey being a part of the band again, going on five years already, it definitely feels like a unit. Everything that was great about him on ‘Worship’ is there even more on this new record.”

“I know that there are a lot of expectations out there for this new album,” Bello admitted, “but that doesn’t really affect us because we write the way we write. We’re all from New York, so we love a challenge, and while I’m happy to have people say that Anthrax is back and that ‘Worship Music’ was the best album of our career, we raised the bar on this one, I think we have the goods with the new songs, and I’m proud to say that. At the end of the day, all you can do is have it come from the heart, do your best, and hope that people like it. That’s what we did with ‘Worship Music,’ and look what happened.”

Anthrax’s new album, as yet untitled, will likely be released later this year.

Dates for Leg One of Anthrax’s 2015-2016 tour are BELOW (as well as their recent contribution to the new Game Of Thrones mix tape).

Worship Music was worth the wait, but while it was a big hit for Anthrax, arguably pushing them back behind Metallica as the number 2 most popular classic thrash band currently, there were still some doubters who were biased by the whole Dan Nelson saga. I’m looking forward to the new Anthrax stuff. It’s great to have Joey Belladonna on fire again since his return and now with Jonathan Donais on board I have a feeling it is going to be some of the best stuff in Anthrax’s lengthy career. They just seem really fired up and more genuine in their excitement right now than the other big 4 bands. Plus, Donais (ex-Shadows Fall) was a worthy talent to replace the very pro Rob Caggiano in the band. With 2015 bringing new Armored Saint AND Anthrax releases, anyway you slice it this will be a win for heavy metal!

Pepper Keenan still in Down, re-joins Corrosion Of Conformity

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at 1:53 PM (PST)

MyfavepepperKeenanpic

Listening to John Garcia’s great kinda ZZ Top slow burner “The Blvd” and browsing online. I read some welcome news about a guitarist we all know and love.

Lambgoat is reporting that Pepper Keenan (aka The coolest mofo in showbiz) is still in NOLA sludge kings Down, despite also hitting the trail again with veritable punk rock AND southern metal institution Corrosion Of Conformity! COC confirmed he is back and doing a UK tour.

Corrosion of Conformity are reuniting with guitarist/vocalist Pepper Keenan for UK and European dates. Other than a few surprise appearances, this will be the first time Keenan has toured with the band since 2006. This will also be the first time the “Deliverance” lineup of the group has played together since 2001.

While IX was one of the better hard rock albums of 2014, you gotta love COC with Pepper as well. Any line up of the band is a real treat.

For dates see BELOW.

2015: Let’s get this party started right!

Ok, y’all! 2015 is officially underway and as odd as it feels that the Cubs are gonna win the world series this year (if you believe Back To The Future 2), we ought to start celebratin’ anyway. Rock with some pizazz, it will last, why you ask? Because if there is anything 2014 proved it’s that no matter what shifts in the marketplace there will always be die hard underground music fans anyway. Today is the day that most PR folks get back from a holiday vacation and start flooding journalists with media requests or posting press releases again. The holiday break was a good time to reflect back but now it’s once more into the breach, my friends. From the recently released new  Dir En Grey to Anthrax back in the studio  to Enslaved and Yob touring plans, there is going to be a lot of cool music in the air to discuss from both edgy fringe bands and tried and true heavyweights.

Thanks for supporting metal , hard rock and hard core via your love of Metal Riot.

Anthrax “Indians” bourbon, starting new album

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 8:46 AM (PST)

3081bfe8-96d7-4cca-87d7-1819ab2687bcFunny, I was just this very morning reflecting with journalist Brian Krasman on bands who had done craft beverages. I remembered Daylight Dies made beer and Brian told me 1349 had one ( I hope it comes with plague mold ergot)! Maynard also has his wine place though I think  liked the Dave Matthews wine better (does that make me lose metal points?).

Anyhow, the thrash titans Anthrax, still the funnest of the classic thrash bands around attitude-wise, have unveiled a friggin’ bad ass bourbon today called…Indians! Yes, one of the most rad ‘thrax songs of all time is now drinkable. Now if only the NFL would change the name of the Redskins to The Arrows, we would be in a much better world already.

What better way for the members of Anthrax to celebrate their sixth Grammy nomination than to toast it with a glass of their own brand of bourbon, “Indians.”

Read the full announcement/bourbon roll out, below. I don’t drink anymore, but cheers to the boys on their Grammy nomination for the Dio cover. It is cool they were nominated along with Slipknot, Motorhead and Mastodon, though I was annoyed about Tenacious D (no offense to Jack and KG at all ‘cuz they rule)…but really, in a year with more great metal than maybe ever, the last nomination slot ought to have gone to Triptykon, Castle, House Of Lightning (so siiiick), Vader , anybody.

Corrosion Of Conformity vets to perform “Blind” at K.Ludwig benefit

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at 9:43 AM (PST)

Vocalist Karl Agell, who sang on CORROSION OF CONFORMITY‘s 1991 seminal Blind full-length and founding drummer Reed Mullin will perform the LP in its entirety on Sunday, November 9th at the Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh, North Carolina. The concert is a benefit show for Katherine Ludwig, former editor of long-running heavy metal magazine, Metal Maniacs, who is currently battling non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Footage of the band rehearsing for the upcoming performance (plus jamming some Slayer and Motorhead!!!) can be viewed at THIS LOCATION.

Comments Mullin, “I only heard about Katherine’s medical problems a month ago, and the minute after, I was on the phone with Karl Agell to see if he’d be into doing a benefit for her. I’m not sure folks today know just how instrumental she was in introducing and exposing your typical ‘metal maniac’ of the early ’90s to so many bad ass bands. A lot of which, like COC, had never been given an audience like that before. We had been in fanzines with circulations of maybe a couple hundred, but Metal Maniacs was thousands and thousands! A great advocate for little known underground metal, as well as hardcore/punk bands, she promoted the Blind album to the point where by the end of the year it was on virtually everyone’s top ten metal albums of 1991. I can’t overstate how important she was to COC’s success. Without her, Blind wouldn’t have sold what it did. And after that, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say there probably would never have been a Deliverance album. Katherine Ludwig is wonderful person and I hope we can give back a little for all the goodness she gave us.”

A Facebook page has been launched by Alicia Morgan, who worked as Ludwig’s assistant and was editor for several issues of the magazine. Writes Morgan: “[Katherine would] cover bands before they were on the mainstream radar: Sepultura, Voivod, Prong, Kreator, White Zombie, Obituary, Cathedral, Cro-Mags, Neurosis, Eyehategod, Carcass, Corrosion Of Conformity etc. She gave a voice to underground punk/doom and crust bands like  Amebix, Deviated Instinct and Winter. She gave a platform to unsigned bands and ‘zines. In her editorials, she wrote about issues that meant something to her. Racism. Sexism. Human rights. Animal rights. Vegetarianism. Homophobia. Even if she got flack about it, she’d soldier on, and call people out… I’m asking you to give Katherine, this leader, this beautiful and strong warrior, donations that will relieve some of the burden to ease costs that go along with all of the guts and glory that go along with chemo, and cancer, and everything and everything that will help as she helped all of you.”

Deep Cuts: Scott Ian

To celebrate Scott Ian’s “don’t call it spoken word” Swearing Words In Glasgow NYC DVD screening at CMJ, I plucked three top notch Deep Cuts featuring his thrashing baldness. No S.O.D. song was picked since pretty much every one is great, by default. It’s fuckin’ S.O.D.

Dealing with Scott there are so many choices, but I got a Pearl, a Necro and a stellar Anthrax John Bush -era classic for ya below. While I approve of the speaking words/spoken word/screaming words whatever ya call it route, don’t pull a Rollins and stop doing as much music, Scott.

Or at least start writing ballads when you are REALLY old…NOT!
