Stratovarius are a legacy band who have given so much over the years. They have played a role in many chapters of power metal through their different, yet all talented, line ups. Eternal is their newest and finds the band emitting blazing power metal epic victories as skillfully as ever. Despite it being their 16th album in the history of the band, Eternal can stand on its’ own alongside classics like Polaris or the shining majesty of Destiny.

I included their most recent previous record Nemesis on my top 5 albums of the year when it was released, but while Eternal is not as perhaps aggressive as that recent statement , it nonetheless is a super worthy anthem that many fans of earlier Stratovarius as well as Matias-era fans will rightfully treasure.

When I was a huge teenage Dischord Records fan I’d go for weeks at a time Fugazi-binging. The Jesus Lizard were also a band like that for me. No one toe in the water or iTunes shuffle through one song before on to The Walkmen or Stevie Wonder or whatever (we didn’t have iTunes or The Walkmen – the band- then anyway). Nope. It was all of GOAT and a side of Liar on tape or nothing. And a full dose of Red Medicine. The much different famed power metal heroes Stratovarius are the same way for me. News of any impending release sends me dusting off cds of past records as a new song might make me yearn to hear all of Elements Pt. 1 or Elysium and then I’m hooked. I hear Rush fanatics are the same but I think they pretty much always just listen to Rush, which is awesome.

Anyhow, Timo Kotipelto’s expert tale weaving and the new guitar visions of Matias Kupiainan have resulted in bold strokes that have assuaged many critics doubts. Nemesis in particular made my top 5 albums of ALL of 2013 for this very site, in the company of Palms and some other more hip to like bands. But make no mistake, Stratovarius always have ruled and stil fucking rule.

Got this press release today: (!!!)

Stratovarius will release Eternal on September 18 via earMUSIC. The symphonic metal masters offer a guided and intimate tour of the album via this behind-the-scenes mini-documentary.

It’s 12 minutes long and allows fans and viewers to take a deep dive and to experience the birth of Eternal.

The mini-doc spotlights the band in the studio recording, along with interviews. It’s in-depth and intriguing.

Watch this keyhole view of Stratovarius while making Eternal here.

Top Ten most metal classic RPG characters

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at 9:31 PM (PST)

Kids today want to be on Instagram and listen to mall core instead of playing D&D and listening to death metal. Poseurs! You probably have never even heard of “Tasha’s uncontrollable hideous laughter”, you selfie taking tramps and bro-step dweebs!

Thankfully there is hope. Even Madonna is getting into dressing up like Game of Thrones now that she is a cool mom. Still, Game of Thrones is great and all but the lack of any real good adaptations to film or tv of classic Advanced Dungeons & Dragons worlds is pathetic. The Dragonlance cartoon was horrible and had terrible animation. The D&D movie with Jeremy Irons was a joke (and he is a great actor). Lord of the Rings is still going strong as a franchise and there are plenty of geeks who grew up on TSR/Wizards of the Coast RPG worlds like Spell Jammer, Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Dark Sun or Greyhawk. Can we please get a good version of something from one of these properties? Make them grim and awesome! Ogres! Umber Hulks! Boobs! C’mon!!!

Anyway, in a fit of geek rage I compiled an educational list of some of the most truly metal and bad ass characters in the history of AD&D role playing worlds. I have even paired them with a character appropriate metal song for you dorks out there. Put down your girlfriends (if you have one) and pick up some twenty sided dice!

The true trailblazers of Finnish melodic power metal Stratovarius are releasing a very special live CD/DVD set in North America under the Eagle Rock imprint Armoury Records on August 28, 2012.  It is to be called Under Flaming Winter Skies – Live In Tampere and is special because it is taken from the farewell tour the band set up to say goodbye to longtime drummer Jörg Michael back in 2011.  The set was filmed and recorded in Tampere, Finland on November 19, 2011 and is one of the very last shows the band ever played with Michael.

The band played an amazing set full of their classic songs and even recorded a 30 minute documentary on their long history.  The set will also include interviews with each member of the band and comments that Jörg Michael made on his personal reasons for leaving the band. This is sure to be a real treat for any Stratovarius fans or just power metal fans in general.

If you would like to check out the CD/DVD tracklists you can click right here.

How many of you Metal Rioters out there have gone to your local record store of choice and picked up a new metal album solely based on the art that graces its cover? I have found many a hidden gems and a few utter disappointments but there are few things greater in this world than gently cracking open the liner notes for the first time as the smell of ink and paper washes over you.

In the world of iTunes and Pandora, the art form that is the album cover is slowly dying. But we’re here to remind  you that in the world of heavy metal, the art of the album cover is alive and well! So each Tuesday we’ll present to you the best album covers of the week to declare what we all already know – Heavy Metal is art.

We missed the first few months of 2011 so we are now giving you the opportunity to let us know what the Album Covers of the Month should be. This week we’re going all the way back to January. For a look at what kick ass covers came out, head on over here.

Stratovarius “Dreamspace”-era lineup releasing new album in January 2012

Posted by Tommy on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 10:21 AM (PST)

This is huge news for old-school Stratovarious fans. The original “Dreamspace” lineup will be releasing a new album in January 2012. Just like the old days, the band will be fronted by current Symfonia guitarist, Timo Tolkki. Fellow ex-Strato members Tuomo Lassila (drums,) Anti Ikonen (keyboards,) and Jari Kainulainen will round out the band.

This new album will be in celebration of Strato’s 30th anniversary as a band. Due to legal issues, the name of the band, “Project Strato,” had to be scrapped but the band has already written 20 songs, some of which include the songs including “Return To Dreamspace”, “Digital Jesus”, “Santiago”, “Chevaliers De Sangreal”, “Full Circle” and “Farewell No. 2.”

Tolkki drew up and signed an official waiver on May 20, 2008 giving up all rights to the Stratovarius name.  Strato has since then gone on to release 2 albums.

Stratovarius released their newest album”Elysium” on January 12, 2011 via Edel.

Stratovarius cancel french dates as a result of illness to Timo Kotipelto

Posted by Tommy on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 11:22 AM (PST)

Finnish power metal pioneers Stratovarious have announced that they’ve been forced to cancel their French dates as a result of frontman Timo Kotipelto falling ill. It’s the second time in a short while that the band has been afflicted with health issues. A couple of weeks ago, drummer Jörg Michael had to be temporarily replaced for a handful of shows as a result of his battle with thyroid cancer, and his ongoing treatment.

You can watch the band announcing the cancellation here. The band had the following to say about Timo,

“Well, the good news is that we’re back on the road with Helloween. And Jörg Michael is back in his drum chair after his brush with death. The bad news is that Timo Kotipelto caught some sort of bacterial infection. We suspect it was something from the backstage food in December, but we don’t know. Two of the other people on the tour had the same thing: a very bad dysentery-like stomach infection with vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, also eventually had to go to hospital, etc…Timo’s infection is stubborn and in addition to ruining his Christmas break, it has dried out his vocal cords. In his own words, he can’t sing a note at the moment. We are currently in France and so far we had to cancel playing in Paris and Lyon. We are of course very sorry about this, and nobody is more heartbroken or frustrated than Timo himself. Apart from heeding the advice from doctors we are in touch with, the only thing we can do at the moment is to hope Timo gets better. We will ride the 1000 km to Bilbao tonight and hopefully we will all get some sleep on the nice smooth French motorways. Here is a short video about the Paris cancellation and some words from Jörg.”

Stratovarius is all set to release their newest album”Elysium” on January 12,2011 from Edel.

Stratovarius drummer Jörg Michael health update

Posted by NichTheHair on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at 1:29 PM (PST)

In a statement on their website, Stratovarius drummer Jörg Michael addresses the fans about his ongoing thyroid cancer treatment. Briefly, Jörg states that treatment is going well and that he has been, in fact, practicing drums lately. Singer Jens Johansson commented “He is a fighter. We have all talked to him and it’s clear that this guy is not down for the count. He and his team of German doctors are pissed off and ready to kick ass, and I would not want to be a little cancer cell on these guys’ shit list.. believe me.”

Stratovarius is all set to release their newest album”Elysium” on January 12,2011 from Edel.
