The true trailblazers of Finnish melodic power metal Stratovarius are releasing a very special live CD/DVD set in North America under the Eagle Rock imprint Armoury Records on August 28, 2012.  It is to be called Under Flaming Winter Skies – Live In Tampere and is special because it is taken from the farewell tour the band set up to say goodbye to longtime drummer Jörg Michael back in 2011.  The set was filmed and recorded in Tampere, Finland on November 19, 2011 and is one of the very last shows the band ever played with Michael.

The band played an amazing set full of their classic songs and even recorded a 30 minute documentary on their long history.  The set will also include interviews with each member of the band and comments that Jörg Michael made on his personal reasons for leaving the band. This is sure to be a real treat for any Stratovarius fans or just power metal fans in general.

Stratovarius “Dreamspace”-era lineup releasing new album in January 2012

Posted by Tommy on Monday, April 25, 2011 at 10:21 AM (PST)

This is huge news for old-school Stratovarious fans. The original “Dreamspace” lineup will be releasing a new album in January 2012. Just like the old days, the band will be fronted by current Symfonia guitarist, Timo Tolkki. Fellow ex-Strato members Tuomo Lassila (drums,) Anti Ikonen (keyboards,) and Jari Kainulainen will round out the band.

This new album will be in celebration of Strato’s 30th anniversary as a band. Due to legal issues, the name of the band, “Project Strato,” had to be scrapped but the band has already written 20 songs, some of which include the songs including “Return To Dreamspace”, “Digital Jesus”, “Santiago”, “Chevaliers De Sangreal”, “Full Circle” and “Farewell No. 2.”

Tolkki drew up and signed an official waiver on May 20, 2008 giving up all rights to the Stratovarius name.  Strato has since then gone on to release 2 albums.

Stratovarius released their newest album”Elysium” on January 12, 2011 via Edel.

Stratovarius cancel french dates as a result of illness to Timo Kotipelto

Posted by Tommy on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at 11:22 AM (PST)

Finnish power metal pioneers Stratovarious have announced that they’ve been forced to cancel their French dates as a result of frontman Timo Kotipelto falling ill. It’s the second time in a short while that the band has been afflicted with health issues. A couple of weeks ago, drummer Jörg Michael had to be temporarily replaced for a handful of shows as a result of his battle with thyroid cancer, and his ongoing treatment.

You can watch the band announcing the cancellation here. The band had the following to say about Timo,

“Well, the good news is that we’re back on the road with Helloween. And Jörg Michael is back in his drum chair after his brush with death. The bad news is that Timo Kotipelto caught some sort of bacterial infection. We suspect it was something from the backstage food in December, but we don’t know. Two of the other people on the tour had the same thing: a very bad dysentery-like stomach infection with vomiting and diarrhea, dehydration, also eventually had to go to hospital, etc…Timo’s infection is stubborn and in addition to ruining his Christmas break, it has dried out his vocal cords. In his own words, he can’t sing a note at the moment. We are currently in France and so far we had to cancel playing in Paris and Lyon. We are of course very sorry about this, and nobody is more heartbroken or frustrated than Timo himself. Apart from heeding the advice from doctors we are in touch with, the only thing we can do at the moment is to hope Timo gets better. We will ride the 1000 km to Bilbao tonight and hopefully we will all get some sleep on the nice smooth French motorways. Here is a short video about the Paris cancellation and some words from Jörg.”

Stratovarius is all set to release their newest album”Elysium” on January 12,2011 from Edel.

In a statement on their website, Stratovarius drummer Jörg Michael addresses the fans about his ongoing thyroid cancer treatment. Briefly, Jörg states that treatment is going well and that he has been, in fact, practicing drums lately. Singer Jens Johansson commented “He is a fighter. We have all talked to him and it’s clear that this guy is not down for the count. He and his team of German doctors are pissed off and ready to kick ass, and I would not want to be a little cancer cell on these guys’ shit list.. believe me.”
