Take care of each other out there

Posted by Morgan Ywain Evans on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 12:19 AM (PST)

cipher (a buncha years ago at Trash Bar)

We’ve all been at a show where a band says “punch somebody in the face” or “tear this place down”! Well, maybe you haven’t but I have been at a lot of unsavory concerts. Let’s focus instead on the people who have asked from the stage that we take care of one another out there on the floor.

Some thoughts follow.

After the horrid bro eviction of Kelly Marie Tran (who anyone with a brain knows brought a lot of heart and fun to The Last Jedi) from social media by alleged Star Wars fans who missed the fucking point of every movie, after the suicide of someone overflowing with life essence like Anthony Bourdain, after the giant fucking embarrassment of projecting and weak playground bully Trump at the G7 summit and the subsequent even further denigration of what actually makes America great, I just want to make a just shy of 3am weekend post that says that Metal Riot is very much a place for marginalized, depressed and outcast people of all genders. There is a place for you here as a reader if you are not a bigoted and irredeemable trollish jerk.

Don’t let any true bully tell you otherwise. Metal and punk are more important for those who use music to lift themselves up than those who use it to punch down.

And sure, people can improve and change who maybe are currently assholes…but if you don’t have a basic desire to respect others, well…every good mosh pit gets rid of the worst assholes, y’know? The rest of life, including online spaces, oughtn’t be any different.

As a non binary trans masc person who stopped HRT just a little shy of a year a few months ago due to really struggling with mood swings (it is a different journey for everyone and I personally have a lot of trauma that I have to be super mindful of not unbalancing), I know very well that life is not a cake walk all the time. It makes me scoff when people say to get a thick skin to me as an “SJW” when they likely did not grow up most of their early childhood with no electricity like I did, kick heroin years ago or have dozens of friends die too young. Or maybe they did and just went to the darkest place inside, I don’t know? All I know is…A LOT of people come to metal to find a refuge and like minded people who want to pump their fist to Accept, get deeply contemplative to Wardruna or flip their shit along to the latest Nervosa record at high speeds of headbanging. Metal belongs to the world. The world is a place of diversity. If you can’t handle that, cry me a river.

I personally know I have contributed a lot to the underground scene regardless of how well known I am. We have had male, female and those who are in between write for this site. We love musicians and writers of varied ethnic backgrounds and nationalities here. You can not undo the progress that has been made by the less archaic types in the scene who want love to prevail. We don’t need to be stoked about jokes about music fans getting shot (even if it isn’t in our favorite genre) or be psyched at some extreme metal band unapologetically calling people poofters cuz they think they get a pass as drunk Australians or whatever.

If we are to survive and stay relevant to the modern world, even in the more coarse realm of metal,  we have to believe that connectivity under the umbrella of metal or fandom or citizenship or whatever does not have to mean we are stoked about people walking all over us. And no, that does not mean men’s rights advocates need to be met with equal respect when they don’t even acknowledge privilege is real or the entire course of human history, for example. Bug entirely off with that crap.

Anyway, I am gonna go to bed. Just wanted to say do your thing and don’t let the bastards grind you down for wanting to bring light to the world, even the world of aggressive music.

PS check this out.

PSx2 Jamie Clayton liked an IG post comment I left tonight and I am living. Hails.
