Album Review: Lair of the Minotaur – “Evil Power”

Posted by JDKleinhans on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at 9:53 AM (PST)

“We fucked them all/Let’s fuck them all again/Let’s kill these motherfuckers/We fucked them all/Let’s fuck them ’til they’re dead/Let’s kill these motherfuckers.” The chorus from “Let’s Kill These Motherfuckers” sums up the raw and visceral brutality that is Lair of the Minotaur as they throw up their middles fingers to the current state of the mainstream heavy metal scene. While not the masterpiece album of LOTM, “Evil Power” continues the bloody wild ride through long forgotten battles and stories of Greek mythology.

From the very first track you find yourself standing in a savage arena, covered in the wreckage of your slain enemies as a “a big fucking axe,” that is the crunching guitar, thrumming bass, and pounding drums, sweeps in to sever your head from your neck. Rathbone’s guttural vocals spit and snap as he tries to tear out your heart with his teeth. The simple yet catchy guitar riffs scream and punch to rip you limb from limb. The drums pound and crash into your torso, keeping your heart racing as you find yourself marching in double time through the blood soaked and muddy battlefield.

The production on this soundtrack of war has been refined and gives LOTM a cleaner sound but the dirty sound is not lost, only enhanced. Standout track, “Let’s Kill These Motherfuckers,” shows that while they will kick your teeth in and curb stomp your ass, they never take themselves too seriously. The video for their title track is a primal must see for its unadulterated violence. “We Are Hades,” one of two songs that break the four minute mark, blends their trashy sound with the classic guitar and bass sound of Motörhead to create one of the most memorable tracks in the entire LOTM collection.

Your stay on the rollercoaster of carnage that is “Evil Power” is short lived (11 tracks clocking in at 30 minutes), but you’ll never be able to wipe the blood clean from your body, nor will you want to. You will come out covered in blood of your enemies and you’ll find yourself clambering to partake in the epic battle again and again.
