Helios are going to be turning a lot of heads. The tri-state area band was formerly known as Storm Dragon and now is composed of legend Tim Aymar (Pharaoh, Control Denied) , Jonathan Stanley (Mirror Mirror & Bury My Blessings), Eric Rymers (Shiva Stone), Jack Buckholt, and Jeff Loy. They have some scorching new demo material out that already crushes many band’s completed albums. Tim sounds absolutely phenomenal with these guys and the material is complex but accessible for a near perfect heavy metal experience. It is a great blend of technical skill and direct songwriting with sky rattling vocal heights, a super tight rhythm section and crunchy riffs. Looking forward to more! I asked the band how it felt to have things moving forward. Anyone from Priest and trad metal fans to power metal fans to disciples of their previous bands will love this!

“It feels very rewarding! We have worked so hard to rebuild and reinvent the band and we think the addition of Tim did just that. We thank the fans and friends of the band for being so patient through this and we can’t wait to finish the record and play live for everyone!” – Jonathan Stanley.

US prog metal outfit OCEANS OF SLUMBER release the second single, “The Adorned Fathomless Creation”, today off their forthcoming self-titled album out September 4th via Century Media Records worldwide. The song opens with a chaotic tempest before the hypnotic clean vocals enter on top of a frantic riff for powerful effect. One of the most innovative band of songwriters on the planet.

“Violence, revenge, retribution, repeat. The adorned fathomless creation that is humanity, that is society, that is each of us. Warped and blinded by this eye for an eye mentality, we stumble along the path of this insidious and cyclical nature of violence and pain. Hate begets more hate. Fear a contagion. Compassion a lost art of emotional bending. Outcry, anger, rage, repeat. We long for the gentle embrace of compassion, hope to be soothed by a love that is no where to be found. So the machine churns, spewing smoke along a degenerative wasteland. Victim, valor, vengeance, repeat. Our only hope is to remember that among ourselves is an ability to connect, an ability to heal, an ability to grow. To break the machine and free ourselves from its corrosive and cancerous nature. Teach, acknowledge, heal, repeat,” states Oceans Of Slumber about the track relese.

Oceans Of Slumber is available as a standard CD jewelcase, gatefold black 2LP+CD, digital album. Pre-order the album HERE.

Matt Harvey of Exhumed/Gruesome/Pounder

Hey folks. Drinking coffee and listening to the “Human Being” version from The Spaghetti Incident and my brain is fried from binging Mr. Robot back episodes til 4am, but wanted to share this cool thing Decibel did. This is awesome and responsible stuff, not bands just like biting beer cans and shit. Be sure to head HERE for an online gallery of a TON of metal musicians rocking their masks in support of public health. We need this shit cuz a lot of morons listen to metal, so maybe this will help. Just like Eminem’s dope verse on the Kid Cudi track last night, every bit of common fucking sense helps from our entertainers! I am guessing we won’t see any batshit Iced Earth dudes on here. Halford, Chthonic Diety, Anthrax, KEN Mode, Horrendous, Die Choking (which you very well might if you don’t wear a mask, Matt Harvey, Krieg, Max Cavalera and many more participated. Hails. Very cool!

Excited to see some unexpected news in my inbox today! One of the more influential (but still pretty underground and not appreciated enough by new jacks) hardcore bands of the last few decades are getting more love!

Bridge Nine is excited to announce that we will be releasing BURIED ALIVE‘s new EP Death Will Find You on August 21st! Hailing from Buffalo NY and featuring Terror’s Scott Vogel on vocals, Buried Alive were known for their unique metallic edge and, despite their short-lived existence, proved to be one of the most influential hardcore bands from the late 90’s. Twenty years after their initial breakup, Buried Alive are back and ready to release “Death Will Find You”, an EP featuring two brand new songs and two re-mastered songs from their split with Reach The Sky.

Lynette now has enough arms to give all the trick or treaters candy at once this year or perform a full band concert alone

How is everyone today? I am Reeling from finally seeing the 2018 movie Overlord. That was intense. Wow, a future cult classic. Why didn’t anyone tell me how good it was? Like The Thing meets Inglorious Basterds and with Jovan Adepo! That parachute scene is one of the craziest combat scenes I have ever seen in a war/horror movie. I am also pretty annoyed NY is going into stage 4. I just don’t think this reopening shit is safe yet, periodt. Especially when we are learning how much fucking grift went into the “relief” with no rent freeze and shit cash compared to other countries we are allegedly superior than. Kanye and megachurches and slimebag Kushners get relief but American citizens have to listen to Mitch gaslight? Hell no. Anyone trashing Ilhan Omar on Twitter right now is a moron and not to be trusted at all. We DO need huge structural and economic reform. Do not let bootlicking slugs fool you.

Phew. Anyway, RIP to the goat Ennio Morricone. I did not see enough tributes to his greatness on Facebook. For A Few Dollars More is my personal favorite theme he did. It is absolutely perfect. Speaking of the uber-corrupt Facebook, I only still use it for family and some people I would lose complete contact with otherwise, but I did become Facebook friends with friggin’ Mortiis today. That is one of the coolest things to happen to me perhaps ever. Speaking of brilliant instrumental music, you all better be listening to Spirit Of Rebellion. Talk about a genius.

Ok, so today (it is already about 8pm as I write this but my routine has been completely flipped the last few days) I have news about Spylacopa and Bestial Mouths!

First up, Resurrected In Black is the stunning brand new new release from Lynette Cerezo’s ongoing Berlin/LA triumph Bestial Mouths. One of the key acts spearheading a relevant revival of gothy, club friendly but also experimental and daunting industrial music with psychic cave-like depths (see also Caress, Vowws, Boy Harsher for semi-kindred spirits), Bestial Mouth’s latest is the most commanding yet. Cerezo really takes full control here and the results are incomparable. The song arrangements are even more gripping than before and showcase one of the strongest vocalists out there these days the way she deserves.  Fave tracks: Dry As Dust, The Loss, The Fall.

Come for the Ween cover. feel blurry like Puddle Of Mudd? NO, it doesn’t sound like that. This is just a dumb caption, ok?!

NYC avant-garde Candiria offshoot Spylacopa have been an enduring and powerful project over the years, somehow manifesting an almost primeval channeling of energies regardless of the widely morphing genres John LaMacchia’s interests roam amongst. The current stellar line-up also includes Frank Godla, Sabrina Ellie and Michael MacIvor and they have released a killer cover of Ween’s most cult classic tune “Baby Bitch” this week HERE. John and Sabrina killed it on the vox together and man that fretless sounds so fuckin’ good with Frank’s drums. Also love the beefy fills that are like barely restrained but don’t cross the threshold. This is why Godla is a drumboat (that is a new technical term for drummers who create a vortex of nerdy percussion crushes amongst other percussionists, haha).

Mixed by John LaMacchia and mastered by Mario Quintero / Audio MQ, the cover sounds incredible and is for a good cause, to benefit The Innocence Project. Full premiere here at Brooklyn Vegan! Support. Seriously, we need to make sure people aren’t wrongfully convicted and that lives are not destroyed. PMA.

An important new pro equality comp has been released today for metal fans. 31 tracks from Falls of Rauros, Woe, Panopticon, Outlaw Order, Cloud Rat, Krieg, Uprising, Throne Of Blood, Hag Graef, Nechochwen and many more. OVERGROW TO OVERTHROW is extensive and awesome. Plenty of music here to zone out to and feel like the world and metal want to be a better place. Very cool.

Love the Evil Queen Bavmorda pigs sample in the Thou song. Doom’s track is probably my favorite.

Between this and the ferocious new Of Wolves album , metal heads have a good start to an anti-4th partying soundtrack.

Voices from across the Metal and Punk spectrum have united to not only speak out against racism and in support of those who are in the streets actively demonstrating, but work to actively support a fight that all of us must take on.

Digital only. All proceeds to support:
• Black Lives Matter – Over-arching movement to combat racism and fight for social justice in the US and Canada.
• Life After Hate – A nonprofit in the US that seeks to combat racism by providing resources to help people leave racist movements, as well as help de-radicalize violent Far Right extremists.

Psycroptic reveal video for ‘Beyond The Black’

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at 7:41 PM (PST)

Psycroptic have an explosive new video for dark thrash song ‘Beyond The Black’. The very gloomy looking and imposing clip can be experienced below.

The band comments: “We’re very happy have once again worked with our good friend and long time collaborator Wilson Bambrick on the film clip for Beyond The Black. The clip was shot last pre-isolating (in September 2019); and due to the Plague and other delays on our end it hasnt seen the light until now. Please enjoy, and we look forward to getting some new music out later this year.”

The friends at MetalSucks are reporting that Matt Heafy has a new solo deal with Roadrunner. Makes sense. He plays his ass off doing covers and other various things all the time. More Matt!

He also has made a metal cover of the iconic “Toss A Coin To Your Witcher”! I have been praying too the Gods of Metal to have Hetfield sing this in season 2, but I will settle for Heafy! Sounds damn close anyway! Hails!

Crank this for max nerdy joy! Also, Trivium put out one of the best albums so far this year.

Metal Riot’s Top 5 early summer albums for you

“I wouldn’t social distance and now my face looks like this” -Florida Man

Hey there all you cookie puss lookin’ social distancing butterflies. Today is that special time when we unveil our top 5 records to give yourself an even more miserable summer with. Just kidding. Only some of this stuff is miserable and all of it kicks ass enough to make you keep the faith. Hopefully it also makes you stay at home and stop bitching about going out. Just help flatten the damn curve already. If the whole country had sat home for a month straight in April without bullshitting, we wouldn’t be in such bad shape.

Ughh, my cat just took a brutally smelly dump. Hold on a second.

Ok, yuck. Let’s start this off below. Enjoy these smoldering speaker blowers, one and all.

Enterprise Earth share video for Lamb of God cover

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Monday, June 29, 2020 at 11:10 AM (PST)

Enterprise Earth have an in quarantine video out for their Foundation of Bones EP’s cover of Lamb of God’s “Now You’ve Got Something To Die For.” While the huge bellow and impending doom of the original is hard to top, the band did a good job and the coolest parts are probably how they charred up some of the faster parts to a blackened crisp. Gotta love the extra breakdown semi-Oceano thunder fudge at the end as well.

Bottom line – the band did a killer job on a self produced EP and kept the fires burning for fans in a commendable fucking way. Y’all need to peep the Necrophagist cover too as it is even better.

Guitarist Gabriel Mangold comments: “Lamb Of God is one of our collective favorites as we all draw a significant portion of our influence from their catalog. We really wanted to do something off of Ashes Of The Wake and this song seemed to check all of the boxes for us. Straightforward and to the point, this was a ton of fun to cover.”

A surprise 2 song Walking Bombs covers EP for you folks today, recorded May/June during quarantine. The artists Gridfailure and Globelamp helped with various elements on the EP as well.

All ongoing sales of this release will be donated to the Marsha P. Johnson Institute: marshap.org#

#blacktranslivesmatter #pride2020

Here are two lo-fi covers I did this Spring from home with additional support from Gridfailure and Globelamp on certain aspects. It was unintentional, but both songs deal with different aspects of relating to the concepts of self and relationships.

“I Can’t Stand” is one of my favorite Zola Jesus songs and covering anything by her is clearly friggin’ daunting because she is so talented, like a miraculous forest spirit. I think it is cool we have the same birthday. I wanted to focus on feeling the emotion and letting it be my own respectful manifestation of a song I love which I find incredibly moving. People can find themselves alone for many reasons, especially for being different. I wrote Nika and asked if it was ok to try to pull off and she gave me blessing to cover it, which was super awesome. It was also wonderful to have Gridfailure and Globelamp help me with recording different elements for max vibe!”

“Jealous Again” is one of the most aggro Black Flag classics and, frankly, I wanted to yank some of the frankly awful machismo out of it and make it a melodic but twitchy sort of examination of the mechanics of paranoia (without revealing if it’s unfounded or not). Now with Dave Brenner’s help it sounds like a wet cave full of ghosts. The slight organ added was fun because it is this monstrous thing that has apartment hopped with me and my partner and we never plugged in much until now. Oh, and I snuck a Biz Markie Easter Egg in there.” – Morgan Y. Evans

NYC extreme metallers Pyrrhon have released their earth shattering new full length Abscess Time via Willowtip. Some how they defy and embrace death at the same time. This is some of their most impressive technical and vivid songwriting yet. “Human Capital” is one of the most timely and savage songs of 2o2o in experimental death metal with killer lyrics about modern class inhumanity.

Throughout the entirety of Abscess Time, PYRRHON explore the turbulent and ripping darkness of everyday survival. “This album is about watching the human world slowly slide towards collapse while you’re too busy trying to survive until the next day to do anything about it,” comments PYRRHON vocalist Doug Moore. “The process seems to take forever, even though little things change every day. And since you’re constantly straining to keep your head above water, it’s all just the background against a foreground of more immediate dangers.”

PYRRHON entered Menegroth: The Thousand Caves studio in January 2020 with mastermind engineer, Colin Marston (Krallice, Gorguts, Dysrhythmia) at the helm. “Colin Marston has worked on every Pyrrhon record so far – he’s mastered all of them, and mixed our last three. We do a pretty unusual combination of things during our recording process, and he’s about the only engineer out there who’s got experience with all of them,” explains Moore.

And we’re baaaack. Metal Riot news here with the latest clobberin’ time updates to get you through these hard times. “Getting all our fans and friends involved in the making of this video for ‘Bull’s Anthem’ was an absolute blast. We had so much fun going through all the submissions, piecing it together, and being able to bring some much needed laughter into all of our lives during these crazy times. It’s amazing to see so many people united via our music, from all over the world, and joining us in spreading a good responsible message. New York City’s THE THIRD KIND – comprised of current and former members of All Out War, Bastard Clan, Vise Massacre, Awkward Thought, and more – will release their debut LP, Man vs Earth, this Friday. As its assault on the public looms, Toilet Ov Hell is now hosting an advance stream of the entire album, and the band has scheduled a livestream performance from NYC for the day of its release.

Engineered by THE THIRD KIND’s Taras Apuzzo at the band’s home studio at Otter House Studios in Long Island City, Man vs Earth was mastered by Dan Emery at Black Matter Mastering (Kool Keith, Krieg, Dwarves) and completed with cover art by Richard Muller and Frankie Accordi, and layout/design by Apuzzo.

The band offers, “Man vs Earth comes from a proletariat perspective. This music is built to inspire action, alive and fierce like the sun. Each song is written as a fable generally relatable to current events coupled with a reflection of the past. To ride it to win.”

Toilet Ov Hell writes, “…THE THIRD KIND are ready to throw down against all comers with their new album Man vs Earth. While some bands look to the stars and get all googly-eyed thinking about little green men, THE THIRD KIND turn their focus inwards to humanity and don’t like what they see.”

Stream THE THIRD KIND’s Man vs Earth LP at the Toilet Ov Hell portal RIGHT HERE.

THE THIRD KIND will self-release Man vs Earth on black vinyl LP and all digital platforms this Friday. Find preorders HERE.
