King Buzzo at House of Vans NYC by J.M.

2013 was a great year for music. I can’t recall a year in recent memory where I was so torn between so many great releases for my year end “list”. From Tidal Arms to Across Tundras to Ephel Duath to Nails, so many great bands just killed it. Other band greats tried to kill people as well. It was certainly a year for upheaval in the metal world, with scandals from the camps of As I Lay Dying to Nachtmystium to the horribly wrong Lost Prophets saga (you sick fucker, you are a shame to humanity and especially the Welsh, my heritage) upsetting the general public. As I Lay Dying is a real drag since The Powerless Rise is a fucking great album. But on the bright side it was a killer touring year, many albums that will be loved for years came out and heavy music is strong as ever-if not more. And if nothing today suits your fancy or makes you want to say Hail to the King, crank the Dave Grohl mixed B’last record Blood! for an old school slap in the face back to reality!

From my “best of” top pick Killswitch Engage‘s Disarm The Descent to Gorguts’ Colored Sands to Ghost invading the mainstream as the new nameless faces of metal to Corrections House shockingly cold Last City Zero, there was so much to inspire. So horns up, y’all. Here is an array of my thoughts plus year end reflections from members of Mares of Thrace, Storm King, Candiria, Landmine Marathon and more! Also I’ve got some exclusive 2013 live pics of Emmure, Filter, Melvins, For Today and more!

Music Video: Killswitch Engage- “Always”

Posted by flixdestroyer on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 at 4:12 PM (PST)

Killswitch-Engage-2013The beginning of the week saw Killswitch Engage premiere a brand new video for their latest single, “Always.”  The single is taken from last April’s Disarm the Descent, released on Roadrunner Records. The video sees the band experimenting with a narrative form as none of the members appear in the video.  Instead, the plot revolves around the relationship between two brothers.

Killswitch Engage are currently on a co-headlining tour of the U.S. with Lamb of God with support from Testament and Huntress.

Joel Stroetzel, guitarist for Killswitch Engage, commented, “We’re all very excited for the upcoming tour with Trivium! The UK has been a favorite place to play for both bands over the years, so joining forces should make for some great shows! Very psyched!”

Review: California Metal Fest, November 24th

Posted by XxCrashQueenxX on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 11:08 AM (PST)

Hot, sticky, and sweaty. That is a quick overview of what the California Metal Fest experience was like. For being so late in November—it felt like a hot summer day in July.

Once I got to the NOS Events Center in San Bernardino, California the line was already wrapped around the building of people dying to get in. It was only ten in the morning.

New Music: Killswitch Engage – “No End In Sight” (Live)

Posted by SeanB on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 at 7:32 AM (PST)

Here’s a video of some of the first new music to come out since vocalist Jesse Leach has re-joined the Massachusetts metal band Killswitch Engage.  It’s the band performing the song “No End In Sight” which I’m assuming will be on the album.  The video was recorded Friday, July 20 at Ground Zero in Traverse City, Michigan.

Click here to check it out.

When asked about being back and making new music Jesse had the following to say:

“It feels great, man. Surprisngly, [it was] a natural transition. I think the one thing for me was just learning [former Killswitch Engage singer] Howard’s [Jones] material, learning how I was gonna, like, live in the songs and make them my own, and once that happened, it feels natural. It almost feels, in a way, that I hadn’t left, but it is ten years later and we’re all much different people, so it just feels a lot better than it did back then.”

“We’ve got two songs completed for our new record and another 12-13 to go that I’m gonna finish up in the fall. . . Thankfully, [they didn’t have any vocals done with Howard before I rejoined the group] — it was just music; it had no lyrics, no vocals — Howard hadn’t attempted to do anything, so it was a nice, clean slate. [The stuff sounds] fresh, fast, heavy… I couldn’t be more stoked to sing on the record. As a matter of fact, once I signed up to do the audition for those guys, they took me back to Adam’s [Dutkiewicz, guitar] house and we listened to the record and that totally sold me. When I heard the record, I was like, ‘I’ve gotta sing on this.”

Show Review: New England Metal and Hardcore Fest (Day 3)

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Wednesday, June 13, 2012 at 11:12 PM (PST)

The New England Metal and Hardcore Fest is an institution, and this year was one of the best yet. The Palladium Theatre in Worcester, MA was choked with kids wearing way too many band t-shirts and full of enthusiasm on Day 3, when I attended. Days 1 and 2 this year boasted bands like Dragonforce, Bane, Unearth, This is Hell, Nile and The Greenery (though all in all the fest was way more hardcore and metalcore than metal this year, or what I consider metal). Still, I had to attend day 3 and see the return of the original Killswitch Engage line-up plus Recon with Rob Fusco (One King Down, Most Precious Blood)!

The show was awhile back in April at this point, but besides being very busy with multiple articles, bands of my own and jobs, I have also been trying to process all of the energy from that day and do it justice. Better late than never! (Just pretend this is a bi-monthly print mag and not a web site for a minute). Caught some good sets from For Today, Stick To Your Guns and many more.

By now it is no secret that the return of Killswitch Engage with Jesse Leach was a huge, powerful success that just might re-invigorate metalcore if scene kids take all that massive good energy to heart and stop the scene bullshit and redundant breakdowns. Jesse’s positive, spiritual and world searching lyrics initially defined the group that “killed Nu Metal”, before his absence of many years in other projects (Seemless,Times Of Grace and The Empire Shall Fall).
