Ereb Altor, one of the band’s in metal with the most consistently good material, have released a new video for the song  “Midsommarblot”. While the kids won’t be screaming out that song name at the dub step dance floors anytime soon, real metal heads will surely raise a glass of mead over their fallen brethren’s bloody corpses to honor them with this new musical oath to metal glory. The song is a new entry to the epic and slower side of the band’s material , which tends to either honor the more viking or sometimes fast side of Bathory fandom. That said, Ereb Altor’s saga-esque melodic vocals possess a bold strength all their own and their songs often offer keen insights with poetic lyrics and a yearning for something better than the modern world.

Ereb Altor to decimate Summer Breeze 2014

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Saturday, July 5, 2014 at 11:50 AM (PST)

So, this news is a month old, but I am looking for any reason to post about Ereb Altor today. I am stoned and listening to “Nifelheim”. More people simply need to appreciate the majestic, vast strength of this band.

The festival announcement update from the Summer Breeze folks recently proclaimed:

All fans of harsh, yet epic sounds are already familiar with our next confirmed band: EREB ALTOR are coming to SUMMER BREEZE 2014!
The Swedes can be considered the legitimate successors of Bathory, because, just as the viking metal pioneers, EREB ALTOR know too well how to perfectly combine snappy melodies with epic song structures. Add to this a bit of ice-cold nordic atmosphere and what you get is a sonic brew that grabs you and won’t let you go. As an example, may we mention their 2013 album ‘Fire Meets Ice’, the title of which is a pretty accurate description of EREB ALTOR’s music, and that belongs in every proper metal collection. Check it out!

Some of the other confirmed acts this year include Alcest, Bodyfarm, Of Mice & Men, Enforcer, Biohazard and too many more to list!

ErebAltor-FireMeetsIceBest news of the day for metal is that October 15th will see the North American release of Swedish Viking/BM trio Ereb Altor’s latest Fire Meets Ice (via Metal Blade). Major props to Metal Blade for helping to expand Ereb Altor’s fan base. Hopefully this means the early records will all get wider distribution as well because they are all killer. They are one of my all time favorite black metal bands, ever since I heard the intoxicating cold yearning of 2008’s I Hate debut By Honour. Third album Gastrike saw the band move away from the more epic, slow viking material of By Honour and The End to a more violent and fast black metal sound but with equally powerful results.

Click HERE to read a Gastrike-era interview with the band I did for Metal Riot. And listen to new track/watch the lyric video for “Nifelheim” HERE.

The Fire Meets Ice press release promises good things:

“The Swedes have not forgotten their traditional elements. Hypnotic melodies and sweeping parts will be present again on the new Opus “Fire Meets Ice” that will see the light of day the summer of 2013. On this new album which will be unleashed by Cyclone Empire in Europe and Metal Blade Records in North America Ereb Altor will summon the Norse Gods again and take the best parts from each sound of Ereb Altor’s history to create a varied masterpiece.”

Well, I could not be more excited. This band is just unbelievable.

“The area where I live is named Gästrikland or Gästrike and if you remove the dots over the ”a” it means something like ghost realm in Swedish,” says Mats, vocalist/guitarist of Ereb Altor. “There are some really dark stories and that’s why the music had to turn out darker than before. I have no idea if we will dig deeper in the black hole or if we will hail our old gods and do a more epic album next time, only time and inspiration can tell.”

“Gastrike” (Napalm Records) is the new album in question that Mats is discussing and it is by far the most aggressive LP yet from the Swedish tour de force. Far more thrashing black metal than some of their storied, doomed viking/epic black metal, the album still is massive and really completely brilliant (plus many melodic viking vocals remain as well).

This band should be huge and I can’t endorse them enough. I will always remember discovering their doom masterpiece “By Honour” record on an I Hate Records advert on the back of Terrorizer (discovered Sub Rosa in the same ad!) and ever since I have never felt that a band did a better job honoring the legacy of Bathory while also being true to their own art.

Do yourself a favor. To read an interview with Mats about the stories, songs and thoughts behind “Gastrike” click HERE.
