Danica Roem made myself and a lot of other people cry last night when she won a race in VA against an LGBTQ bigot. Metal Riot has two trans writers, myself included, so it was certainly nice to see some national representation turn the tide on hate. Minneapolis even elected their first African American trans woman to city council! We are regular people who just want to live our lives.

Decibel has Roem’s victory speech HERE, in which she actually also thanks metalheads! Metal scribe Kim Kelly has a good profile on Roem you can read HERE as well.

Parker Molloy from Upworthy had one of my favorite reactions on Twitter:

Video: For Today guitarist calls it quits, vocalist apologizes

Posted by longhairedpoet on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 9:38 PM (PST)

God-loving metalheads For Today have recently gotten a lot of publicity when their guitarist, Mike Reynolds, made some homophobic comments on Twitter. Mike Reynolds has since called it quits. The band released the following statement on their Facebook page:

“Mike Reynolds is no longer a part of For Today. He has decided that now is the time for he and his wife to put their plans in motion to enroll in bible college, and to begin working toward full-time missions work in the Middle East. Mike will be replaced by long-timefriend of the band, and former In The Midst of Lions guitar player, Sam Penner, who will be appearing with the band as they headline their upcoming Fight The Silence tour.”

Their vocalist, Mattie Montgomery, has since issued a formal apology to fans or anyone negatively effected by the comments made by Mike Reynolds.

For Today reinforces my hatred for Christian metal.

Posted by tyrusrunyan on Friday, January 11, 2013 at 9:25 AM (PST)

Sioux City metalcore band For Today recently found themselves in a dill of her pickle due to comments made by guitarist Mike Reynolds. Mike Reynolds went on twitter in response to Pastor Louie Giglio withdrawal from Obama’s inauguration ceremony and stated that “homosexuality is a sin” among some other Medieval things.  I am not gonna lie to you I never really figured that Christian metal would be responsible for bad press in the metal community but it looks like I was proven wrong.

You can read the full statement here.
