I am listening to the uplifting pop infused vocal of “Mercy Mirror” from my promo copy of the new album Resist from the internationally influential act Within Temptation. It is a great record, another victory for a band with many who have never been shy about aiming for epic bombast where others have their eyes lower to the ground. The follow up to 2014’s excellent Hydra (has it been so long already?!) was worth the interminable wait for fans and is sure to be a major release of the quarter. The album contains guest appearances by singer Jacoby Shaddix (Papa Roach), Anders Fridén (In Flames) and Jasper Steverlinck (Arid), which is chill, but the band don’t need cameos for the whole album to stand strong. Sharon and the gang sound very inspired and ready to add to their legacy.

Get the album as of February 1st! It is still a few hours before release day as I write this.

From the cinematic “Endless War” with a piano-outro to live for to the already popular with fans rallying cry “Raise Your Banner” to the stomping crunch of “Trophy Hunter”, this record will fill a big void for a lot of people wanting to feel lifted up during some very depressing times right now. Some people listen to the most angry stuff in times of trouble but also it is good to remember hope and a sweeping sense of history, which Within Temptation provide in ample doses throughout. They truly just come off as very professional and next level grandiose (but I mean that as a compliment in their case).

The band comment on their new futuristic direction:  “We were done with orchestras and classic metal riffs. We’ve done it a thousand times before! This time we’ve expanded our horizon and started listening to powerful artists from other genres that implement bombastic sounds and huge basses into their tracks. All of a sudden we thought: we need these new exciting sounds too – but not the slick artificial feel that so often is connected to it. We started finding ways to roughen up these modern sounds, resulting in a surprisingly new musical world that is heavier, dirtier and more futuristic than we’ve ever created before.”

“Supernova”, my favorite song on the record, proves by itself that this was not a risk that was taken in vain. Amazing, huge stuff.

Symphonic metal top sellers  Within Temptation have released a new video from their Hydra release, a very sci-fi enhanced production for the song “And We Run”, which features rapper Xzibit. Startlingly, the sort of baritone barrage rap style of Xzibit sounds pretty cool over the crazy string arrangements and vocal chants of “I can do this epic shit in my sleep” mega talented chanteuse Sharon den Adel.

Hydra features some of the band’s catchiest and most realized material and is one of the most exciting releases in the genre in recent memory (along with tourmate’s Delain’s The Human Contradiction).

The band unleashed the following statement:

The song is about the fact we sometimes get caught up in a situation where we can’t be ourselves; breaking loose and moving on can be difficult but it’s necessary to stay true to who you are. The video is about escaping darkness, solving your issues and moving into a brighter future. Check it out now!

Timo Somers posts sweet Aristedes 070 guitar video

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at 7:03 PM (PST)
For everyone asking me what guitar I am using this tour: the Aristides 070! Check me shredding it here! – Timo Somers via Facebook

Delain‘s awesome axe man Timo is a fan favorite known for melding skill and great melodic sense into the backbone of the Delain sound. The band are currently on an enviable tour with fellow sympho-maniacs Within Temptation and are killing it. I would love to follow that tour around with grilled cheese sandwiches like a hippie on Grateful Dead tour! I’d see every stop!

Anyway, Delain’s new album The Human Contradiction is awesome and I loved the way it explores human intentions. Here is my review. I’d only wished foor a bit more soloing on it, but here is Timo playing his ass off in a video demonstrating his chops on the guitar he is using on this kick ass tour.

Sonisphere 2012 has been cancelled

Posted by jessepac on Thursday, March 29, 2012 at 1:31 PM (PST)

Sonisphere 2012The pride of Knebworth, England has is no longer, as the 2012 edition of the Sonisphere Festival is no longer happeneing.

Here is the full statement from the promoters:

“It is with very heavy hearts and much regret that we announce the cancellation of Sonisphere Knebworth 2012. Putting the festival together in what is proving to be a very challenging year was more difficult than we anticipated and we have spent the last few months fighting hard to keep Sonisphere in the calendar. Unfortunately circumstances have dictated that we would be unable to run the festival to a standard that both the artists and that Sonisphere’s audience would rightly expect. We want to express our deepest regrets to the artists and to thank all the staff, suppliers and contractors who worked so hard with us to try and pull off what has proven to be an impossible task and we know how much they share in our disappointment. We also want to send a huge thanks to the Sonisphere fans who stuck by us and we are so sorry that we can’t fulfil what we set out to do. Ticket holders will automatically receive a full refund direct from their ticket agents.”

Metal acts like Mastodon, Gojira, Lacuna Coil, Within Temptation, Electric Wizard, and many more were slated to play.
