Aries season is here and it is not only my birth month but a stellar fucking month for fiery metal releases. Shit, the Meshuggah video practically has a Balrog in it. Horns, indeed. Heriot, Meshuggah, Egregore, Caliban and Lords Of The Trident take the cake for us this month here at MR HQ. Support!

German metalcore mainstays Caliban have released another reliably churny and gurgly metalcore opus, the tormented new single “Ascent Of The Blessed”. While nothing is out of the ordinary here, including the solid hooks, the longtime fans of the band and the sub-genre will certainly find plenty to headbang to their hearts content about.  The band’s new Century Media release Dystopia follows hot on the heels of Zeitgeister and has fans chomping at the bit. Initial reactions during the single premiere were very positive.

That said, the band go deeper than your average metalcore band lyrically.

Vocalist Andreas Dörner states about “Ascent Of The Blessed”, “This song is inspired by my imagination of a near-death-experience and the question about my life. It’s about the question if one is a good or an evil person.”

New album Dystopia was produced by Benjamin Richter (Moonspell, Emil Bulls) and guitarist Marc Görtz, as well as co-produced by Callan Orr (Dream On, Dreamer).

CALIBAN to release German-language album ‘Zeitgeister’

Posted by Morgan Y Evans - Walking Bombs on Thursday, February 11, 2021 at 6:41 AM (PST)

One of my personal favorite metalcore bands ever, Germany’s CALIBAN have released many rock solid examples of the genre and worked hard to keep the sound both meaningful and alive in the scene through hard work and valuable, emotionally resonant material. They balance heavy and catchy better than most bands doing that contrast, as well.

Now the band are doing something cool I think they ought to be applauded for, re-recording a bunch of tunes in their native German. I think it is problematic when band’s feel like they can only sing in English because of capitalism and the market share. Hey, wasn’t “Despacito”  like the biggest YouTube played video ever? Maybe we should be encouraging more education and culture exchange rather than normalizing English constantly being centered?

From the press release:

It took German metalcore vets, CALIBAN, recording a cover of Rammstein’s “Sonne” to realize that their native tongue was a seamless fit with their time-tempered collision of punishing riffs and Andreas Dörner’s urgent vocals. With fans hungry for the Essen-borne quintet to record an album exclusively in German, the band simply said, “Why not?”, and Zeitgeister, which will be released on May 14th, was born.

11 genre-defining LPs deep into their career, the band’s vision for the album came naturally – a career retrospective and deep-dive into CALIBAN favorites that haven’t had been seen live in some time.

“It wasn’t an easy decision, but once we allowed us to make them as different from the originals as we felt it was needed it came fairly naturally”, explains guitarist and main songwriter Marc Görtz. Of course, some updating was necessary when it came to translating the songs to German. “It turned out to be surprisingly tricky,” states Dörner. “While I feel more at home with my native German it made it a lot more complicated, as I had more options to phrase something.”

Formed in 1997, CALIBAN’s legacy has been a tireless one, touring the globe and sharing stages with the likes of Kreator, Killswitch Engage and Dark Tranquillity just to mention a few. Zeitgeister was a welcome homecoming. With the help of long-running producer Benjamin Richter (Moonspell, Emil Bulls) CALIBAN hand-picked seven tracks to bring new life to:

“Trauma” (feat. Matthi from Nasty, originally “Arena Of Concealment”)
“Herz” (originally “I Will Never Let You Down”)
“Ausbruch nach Innen” (originally “Tyranny Of Small Misery”)
“Feuer, zieh’ mit mir” (originally “Between The Worlds”)
“Nichts ist fĂŒr immer” (originally “All I Gave”)
“Intoleranz” (originally “Intolerance”)
“Mein Inferno” (originally “My Little Secret”)
“Zeitgeister” also boasts a new track, “nICHts”.
Stay tuned for Pre Orders and more info!

Caliban reveal “Intoxicated” video from 2018 album

Posted by Metal Riot on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 2:44 PM (PST)

Caliban are excited to reveal their new album, Elements, will be released on April 6 via CENTURY MEDIA RECORDS. The band have unveiled the first single,”Intoxicated”, with an energetic music video which can be seen below. With Elements, CALIBAN brought back long-time collaborator—who’s been working with the band since 2007’s The Awakening—and studio wizard Benny Richter to co-produce with Görtz at his Nemesis Studios. CALIBAN also hired on Germany-based Andy Posdziech (Any Given Day) and buddy Sebastian ‘Sushi’ Biesler (Eskimo Callboy), as well as Australia-based Callan Orr (Dream On, Dreamer) to assist in the recording process. Elements was mixed by Görtz and mastered by Olman Viper (who previously worked with the band on I Am Nemesis (2012), Ghost Empire (2014), and Gravity (2016)).

“The production on Elements was pretty different,” says Görtz. “The instrumental side of the production was produced by me, Andy, and Callan. Then, Benny and myself worked on fine-tuning the music. The vocals, however, were produced by Benny, with Sushi acting as a vocal coach. We wanted Benny to focus on the vocals and the vocal production. Getting them right was very important to us.”

The band commented on he album’s cover artwork, as seen featured above, stating:

“We used the elements Earth, Air, Fire, and Water as symbols for realization, ideas, power, and emotion. These symbols inspire us to continue to do what we love the most, which is to create, evolve, and be inspired by our music. And these elements directly correspond to the cover art, which was done by Marcel Gadacz (Dream On, Dreamer). He did the art for Gravity, so we’re happy to have him back.”

As I Lay Dying announce fall 2012 UK tour with Trivium

Posted by SeanB on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 5:46 AM (PST)

San Diego metalcore act As I Lay Dying have announced a fall 2012 UK club tour with Trivium, Caliban, and Upon A Burning Body.  This will hopefully be to support AILD’s upcoming album which is due out on Metal Blade sometime in the second half of 2012.  It will be a follow up to 2010’s The Powerless Rise, and unfortunately we don’t know much about it but they are supposedly wrapping up production as I write this.

Click here to check out dates and venues.

As I Lat Dying singer Tim Lambesis commented on the tour:

“It’s not very often that a lineup like this works out for a club tour. I can’t wait to get on stage knowing the crowds will be pumped getting a great show from start to finish. That coupled with being on the road with our friends in Trivium again gives me plenty to look forward too.”

200° Awesome: Caliban – “I Am Nemesis”

Posted by NichTheHair on Friday, February 10, 2012 at 1:30 AM (PST)

You like that? Two-hundred proof means pure, right off the still. Yup. That’s right, I just made an alcohol reference. Germany’s metalcore face arsonists Caliban create the perfect soundtrack to fulfill your mosh pit death wish. I Am Nemesis is the second Century Media release for the band. The album incorporates something not many metal bands do: feature guest musicians. I really wish more bands would do this. It brings such a unique listening experience. I Am Nemesis swings its own bloodied chain of brutality, but some help from Heaven Shall Burn and Suicide Silence‘s vocalists, and some always pleasant gang singing provided by As Blood Runs Black, never hurts.

Germany’s Caliban has gifted the world a fresh track off their upcoming album “I Am Nemesis.” Available free online is “Dein R3.Ich” (“thy kingdom” in German), a blistering and bold track. Caliban headed to the studio last year to record their 8th release in their 15 year career.

Caliban will be out and about with Winds of Plague on the “Get Infected” Tour 2012 with support of  We Butter The Bread With Butter, Eyes Set To Kill and Attila.

“I Am Nemesis” will be released in the US February 28th on Century Media.
